Pitch Wars Mentor Wishlist!

I’m so excited to have the opportunity to be a Pitch Wars mentor this year! Here’s a little bit about me

I’ve taught elementary and middle school students for many years and I’m passionate about inspiring students to read and write! I’m thrilled that my debut middle grade novel, EXTRAORDINARY, was published by Skypony Press in May 2015, followed by a second middle grade novel, CALL ME SUNFLOWER in May 2017.

Things I love: coaching my daughter’s Odyssey of the Mind team, figure skating, chocolate, and  Diet Coke with lime (both are better in combination). I’m a fighter for animal rights, environmental causes, and children with special needs. Perseverance is my middle name. I once flunked a figure skating test NINE times but passed it on the tenth! And my road to publication has been a super long one but I’ve learned a lot along the way.  I spent my childhood in New Jersey but currently live with my husband, two daughters, and two pampered cats in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Miriam’s Wishlist:

I am looking for contemporary middle grade that is character-driven and full of heart.

Pull me into your story with a voice that leaps off the page, authentic characters who persevere through real-life challenges, and dialogue that keeps the plot moving forward. A good sense of humor and a positive outlook must be woven in to balance even the most difficult turn of events. Your book needs to stir emotions in me, as my favorite reads are the ones that have made me both laugh and cry. Introduce me to your multi-dimensional characters who will become my friends, staying with me long after I’ve turned the last page

Along with contemporary MG, I’m interested in reading MG stories with a touch of magical realism.

I’ll consider MG fantasy if the story focuses more on character development than fast-paced action-packed scenes.

I’ll consider contemporary YA.

I am not interested in science fiction, thrillers, vampires, werewolves, angels, or high fantasy. I’m not interested in historical fiction (unless set in the 1970s or beyond). Please don’t send religious stories or stories about suicide. I am not interested in seeing graphic violence.
